What's New at Walt Disney World in 2026: The Changes That Actually Matter for Your Trip

2026 is one of the most consequential years in recent Disney World history. DINOSAUR is gone. Genie+ is gone. New rides are opening. Here's what you need to know before you go.

John | Daily Disney March 27, 2026

If you visited Walt Disney World before 2026 and think you know how the parks work, some of what you remember has changed. This is not a minor update cycle. 2026 is one of the most consequential years in recent park history, and the changes affect trip planning in ways that are not obvious until you are standing in the park wondering where something went.

Here is what actually matters for your trip.

The Line-Skipping System Is Completely Different

Genie+ no longer exists. Walt Disney World now operates a three-tier Lightning Lane system: Multi Pass, Single Pass, and Premier Pass. If your last visit used Genie+ or the original FastPass+, the system you knew is gone. The new system separates demand more deliberately — highest-demand rides are priced and sold separately — and requires a different booking strategy than anything that came before it.

DINOSAUR Is Gone

The iconic Animal Kingdom attraction closed permanently on February 2, 2026. DinoLand U.S.A. is being cleared to make way for Tropical Americas — a new land featuring Indiana Jones and Encanto attractions targeted for 2027. For now, Animal Kingdom's ride roster is shorter, which actually makes morning strategy simpler and more achievable than in recent years.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin Is Essentially a New Ride

After closing in August 2025, this Tomorrowland staple returned April 8, 2026 with a major overhaul: handheld blasters replacing the old fixed cannons, new ride vehicles, updated interactive targets, a new character named Buddy, and a revamped scoring system. Expect elevated demand as guests discover the updated version.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Returns in Early May

After a year-plus closure that included a complete track replacement and new Rainbow Caverns effects, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens in early May 2026. If you are visiting before then, the ride will not be available. Once it returns, expect Tier 1 Lightning Lane placement.

Soarin' Across America Debuts May 26 at EPCOT

A brand-new version of the beloved Soarin' attraction, celebrating America's 250th anniversary, launches May 26 — the same day Cool Kids' Summer begins across Walt Disney World. Important: this is a limited-time experience, not a permanent replacement. Soarin' Around the World operates through May 13, after which the attraction closes for changeover until the May 26 debut.

Millennium Falcon Gets a New Mission Starting May 22

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Hollywood Studios features a brand-new mission starring The Mandalorian and Grogu, debuting the same day as the theatrical film. The updated ride — built on Unreal Engine 5 technology — lets crews choose their own destination for the first time. This is a significant upgrade that will increase demand for an already popular attraction.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Is Becoming The Muppets

The Aerosmith version permanently closed March 2, 2026. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is expected to open in summer 2026. Between the March closure and the summer reopening, this ride is not operating at all. If you are visiting Hollywood Studios during this window, plan accordingly — the park is down a major thrill ride.

Frozen Ever After Has New Figures

Frozen Ever After at EPCOT reopened February 12, 2026 with brand-new lifelike silicone Audio-Animatronics for Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff. The ride experience is the same — the figures are dramatically better.

The Bottom Line

The parks are in a genuine transition year. Some of the changes are subtractions (DINOSAUR, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster during the gap). Some are significant additions (new Soarin', new Millennium Falcon mission, Buzz Lightyear overhaul). The families who know what is open, what is closed, and what is coming will plan better trips than the ones who show up expecting 2023.
