Friday, April 10
Good morning.
Big Thunder Mountain just got a date.
May 3. After 16 months of being closed, new track, new trains, new Rainbow Caverns, and a height requirement drop from 40 inches to 38. Disney announced it yesterday with a video that spent 90% of its runtime pretending to be about Buzz Lightyear before pulling the rug. Classic Disney marketing.
Also: it's 76 degrees today, Saturday looks gorgeous at 79 with a 10% rain chance, and you're about to find out why your Lightning Lane strategy is going to fall apart if you don't read the next five minutes very carefully.
Here's what matters today.

One Person Plans the Trip. Here's How to Make Sure the App Lets Them.
One Person Plans the Trip. Here's How to Make Sure the App Lets Them.
Every Disney travel party has a planner. One person who books the hotel, picks the restaurants, maps out the park days, and wakes up at 7am to grab Lightning Lanes while everyone else is still asleep. If you're reading this newsletter, it's probably you.
Here's where it falls apart: on the morning you need to book Lightning Lanes for your whole group, the app only shows your name. Your spouse isn't there. Your kids aren't there. Your sister's family flying in from Denver? Definitely not there.
The My Disney Experience app has a Friends & Family list. It connects everyone in your travel party so one person can manage tickets, dining, Lightning Lanes, park reservations, and PhotoPass from a single phone. When it's set up right, it's the most powerful planning tool Disney offers. When it's not set up โ and it usually isn't โ it breaks everything.
The setup.
Every adult needs their own MDE account. Your spouse, your parents, the college friend joining for two days. Free account at disneyworld.com or in the app. Kids under 13 don't get their own โ they're added as managed guests under a parent's profile.
The planner then adds everyone to their Friends & Family list. The fastest method: have each person open the app, go to My Profile, tap "Show My Linking Code," and hold up their phone. Scan the QR code. Ten seconds per person. No emails, no invitations, no typos.
Not in the same room? Not a problem. Have each person pull up their linking code, screenshot it, and text the image to the planner. The planner scans the screenshot from their camera roll the same way they'd scan it in person. This works for the aunt in Ohio, the grandparents in Texas, and the college friend who won't commit to anything until three days before the trip.
The step everyone misses.
For kids under 13, the parent managing their profile has to grant the planner permission to make plans for that child. You can be linked to your sister and still not see her kids. She fixes this in her Friends & Family settings by tapping each child and selecting who can manage their plans. Skip this and you're staring at an incomplete guest list on booking morning.
Once linked, the planner controls everything from one phone. Dining for the group. Park reservations. Lightning Lane return times. PhotoPass downloads.
Do this two weeks before your trip. Someone will have an old account tied to a dead email. Someone's kid won't show up because permissions weren't granted. Fixable problems โ but they require back-and-forth, and you don't want that at 6:55am when Lightning Lanes open.
For groups of 8+, split planning between two people. One handles dining and park reservations, the other handles Lightning Lanes. Both need everyone on their list. This prevents the 7am bottleneck of one person booking for 12 people in 90 seconds.
One honest moment. If reading all of this made your eye twitch โ coordinating accounts, linking kids across families, managing dining windows and Lightning Lane drops for a group of 8 or 12 or 16 โ that's because it's a genuine part-time job. And that's just the app setup. It doesn't include figuring out which parks on which days, which restaurants to book, which rides to prioritize, and how to sequence it all without losing your mind. That's why we built the Daily Disney Vacation Planner at dailydisney.com/planner โ a free tool where you plug in your travel dates and get a personalized planning timeline that tells you exactly what to do and when to do it. It won't link your MDE accounts for you, but it'll make sure the planner in your family isn't staring at a blank calendar wondering where to start.
How many people are you managing in MDE for your next trip? (Answer One) |
โก Daily Disney QUICK HITS
Big Thunder Mountain Reopens May 3 โ Disney confirmed the date yesterday. The wildest ride in the wilderness returns after 16 months with completely new track, new trains, refreshed Audio-Animatronics, restored effects, and a new Rainbow Caverns scene featuring glowing stalagmites and stalactites. The height requirement drops from 40 inches to 38 โ opening it up to younger riders for the first time. If you have a May trip booked, this is massive.
Cinderella Castle Moat Turned Green โ Crews are working to clean up lime-green water that appeared in the Cinderella Castle moat this week. It's algae, not Imagineering. The moat should be back to normal within days, but if you're at Magic Kingdom today, the photos are... interesting.
Disney After Hours at EPCOT Sold Out Last Night โ The April 9 event was the third EPCOT After Hours sellout this season. If you're eyeing a future After Hours event, don't wait. The remaining spring and summer dates are selling faster than expected. Check the MDE app for availability on your dates.
Pop Century Kiddie Pool Closing for Maintenance โ If you're booked at Pop Century with young kids, the kiddie pool will be temporarily closed. The main Hippy Dippy pool remains open. Minor, but worth knowing before you arrive.
Daily Disney Insider Tip
The 7am Lightning Lane window is a sprint. Here's how to win it with the MDE App.
At exactly 7am Eastern on each day of your trip, Lightning Lane selections open for Disney resort guests. You have roughly 90 seconds before the best return times are gone. Here's how to be ready:
Have the MDE app open and loaded by 6:58am. Make sure your entire party is visible on your Friends & Family list (you just learned how to do that). Know which ride you're targeting before the clock strikes โ don't browse at 7:01. Tap the park, tap the ride, select all guests, confirm. The families who get TRON at 9:15am and Rise of the Resistance at 11am aren't lucky. They're fast. And they did the Friends & Family setup two weeks ago so the app didn't fight them at the worst possible moment.
๐ Today's Crowd Size Snapshot
Magic Kingdom โ Moderate. Buzz novelty is settling into normal wait patterns. Big Thunder hype starts building but the ride isn't back until May 3. Solid day across all lands.
EPCOT โ Light-Moderate. Festival baseline. The Springtime menu debuted at the Outdoor Kitchens on April 6 โ new items worth trying if you haven't been since the Early Bloom menu ended.
Animal Kingdom โ Light. Beautiful weather for Safaris. This remains the quietest park week over week and the best value for a relaxed day.
Hollywood Studios โ Moderate. Smugglers Run scaffolding is visible near the ride as Disney preps for the Mandalorian mission (May 22 launch). Rise is running. Tower and Slinky Dog are comfortable all day.
Strategy: Saturday is shaping up to be the best weather day in two weeks โ 79 degrees, 10% rain, sunshine. If you're choosing between today and tomorrow for your big park day, tomorrow wins on weather alone. Use today for a lighter park or a resort morning and save the energy for Saturday.

By Wednesday afternoon showers start creeping back into the forecast, and Thursday kicks off runDisney Springtime Surprise weekend with typical mid-April conditions โ mid-80s and 30% afternoon rain. If you're picking your best park days this week, Saturday through Monday is the golden window.
๐ฏ Final Take
There's a moment on every group Disney trip โ usually around 6:58am on the first morning โ when the planner realizes they can't see half the group in the app. The Lightning Lane window is about to open. The phone is in their hand. And the people they spent six months planning for are invisible to the system.
It happens because Disney built the most sophisticated vacation planning app on the planet and then made the setup process feel like filing a joint tax return with your extended family.
Do it early. Do it right. And if the whole process makes your head spin, that's what the Daily Disney Vacation Planner is for โ dailydisney.com/planner. Free. No account required. Just your dates and a plan.
The planner in your family deserves to enjoy this vacation too.
See you tomorrow.
